How to Make ChatGPT Sound More Human: 5 Prompts That Fix the Robot Voice

October 28, 2026

To make ChatGPT sound more human, give it four things a vague request leaves out: who is reading, a short sample of how you actually write, a list of words and habits to avoid, and a limit on sentence length. Then read the answer out loud and fix any line you would never say. A prompt with those details comes back sounding like a person on the first try, and saves the three or four messages it takes to fix a stiff draft one complaint at a time.

Why ChatGPT sounds like a robot

A chat model writes a new answer from whatever is in the box. When the box says "write an email to my landlord about the broken heater," the model has to guess everything else: how well you know the landlord, how annoyed you are, how you normally talk. It guesses the safest, most formal version of each, because that version is safe for anyone.

The result is writing that could have come from anyone. It tends to have the same habits:

  • A greeting people rarely use in real life, like "I hope this message finds you well"
  • Big words where small ones work, like "utilize" for "use"
  • Every point in a list of three
  • An opening sentence that restates the request
  • A closing paragraph that sums up what was just said
  • The same sentence length, line after line

None of these are wrong. Together, they are what makes a reader think "a computer wrote this."

The five details that make it sound like you

1. Who is reading, and how well you know them. "My landlord, who I've emailed twice before and who is usually friendly" gives the model a relationship to write inside. Tone follows the relationship.

2. A sample of your own writing. Paste three or four sentences you wrote yourself, from a text, an email or a post, and ask the model to match it. A sample teaches your rhythm faster than any list of adjectives.

3. A list of what to avoid. Name the habits above. "No greeting line, no summary at the end, no words like utilize or facilitate." Models follow a short list of specific rules well.

4. A sentence limit. "Keep sentences under 15 words" or "write at an eighth-grade reading level" pulls the writing toward how people talk.

5. The format. A text message has no subject line and no bullet points. A social caption has short lines. Say what shape you want, and the model stops dressing everything up as a formal letter.

The same request, typed two ways

Here is the version most people start with:

Write an email to my landlord about the broken heater.

And here is the same request with the five details filled in:

Write a short email to my landlord about the heater, which stopped working on Sunday.

We have a good relationship, and I have emailed him twice before about small repairs. Keep it friendly but clear that I need it fixed this week, since nights are getting cold.

Match the tone of this sample of my writing: "Hey Mark, quick one. The kitchen faucet is dripping again, no rush, just wanted it on your radar. Thanks!"

No greeting line like "I hope you're well," no summary at the end, no formal words. Under 80 words.

The first version gets a stiff, formal letter that opens with a pleasantry and closes by thanking him for his attention to the matter. The second gets something close to what you'd actually send, in your own words, sized for an email someone reads on their phone.

Five prompts to copy

Each one works in ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. Fill in the brackets.

Rewrite something in your voice

Rewrite the text below so it sounds like me. Here is a sample of how I write: [paste 3 or 4 of your own sentences]. Keep my meaning, cut anything formal, and keep sentences short. Text to rewrite: [paste].

A message to someone you know

Write a text to [who, and how well I know them] about [what]. I want them to [what you want them to do]. Sound casual and warm. No greeting line, no sign-off, under 50 words.

A social media caption

Write a caption for [what the post shows] for [who follows me]. Short lines, plain words, the way I would say it to a friend. No hashtags in the text and no question at the end.

A work email that doesn't sound like a template

Write an email to [name and role] about [topic]. We have worked together for [how long]. The one thing I need from them is [the ask]. Lead with the ask, give one sentence of context, and leave out any greeting line or closing summary. Under 120 words.

An edit pass on a draft you already have

Read the draft below and list every sentence that sounds stiff, formal or like a template. For each one, suggest a plainer version that keeps the meaning. Draft: [paste].

The last one is useful even when you wrote the draft yourself.

Make it stick with custom instructions

If you write in ChatGPT often, you don't have to paste your sample every time. ChatGPT's custom instructions setting, under Personalization in Settings, lets you save rules it applies to all of your chats. Put your short sample there, along with your list of habits to avoid and your preferred sentence length. Claude and Gemini have similar settings.

Keep the instructions short. A few clear rules work better than a page of them.

Always read it out loud

Even a great prompt gets you a draft. Read it out loud before you send it. Any line you stumble over, or would never say to the person's face, gets rewritten. That one step catches most of what still sounds off, and it makes sure every fact in the message is right, since the model only knows what you told it.

Skip writing the long prompt

Every prompt above takes a minute to fill in. PromptPro does that part: type what you want in one plain sentence, like "a friendly email to my landlord about the broken heater," and it builds the full prompt with the reader, tone, limits and format filled in, ready to paste into any AI tool. It's free to start, with five prompts a month, at promptproapp.io.

Frequently asked questions

Why does ChatGPT sound so robotic?
When a prompt only names the topic, the model fills every gap with the safest, most formal version of the writing. That is where the stiff greetings, the big words and the tidy summary at the end come from.
What is the best prompt to make ChatGPT sound human?
Tell it who is reading, paste a short sample of your own writing, list the words and habits to avoid, and ask for short, plain sentences. Then read the result out loud and fix anything you would never say.
Can I make ChatGPT always write in my voice?
Yes. Put your voice rules and a short writing sample in ChatGPT's custom instructions, and they apply to all of your chats.
Does this work in Claude and Gemini too?
Yes. Every major assistant follows a plain prompt with a reader, a sample, a list of things to avoid and a format.
What does PromptPro do?
You type what you want in plain English, and PromptPro turns it into a complete prompt with the reader, tone and format filled in. It is free to start, with five prompts a month.
